Built for Record Speeds: In the late 1930s, Germany aimed to connect Munich and Berlin with high-speed electric express passenger trains . The E 19 series was engineered with a service top speed of 180 km/h (111 mph), but was structurally optimized to push up to a staggering 225 km/h (140 mph).
The Henschel/SSW Masterpiece: Only four prototype units were ever manufactured before WWII halted production. While units 01 and 02 were built by AEG, unit E 19 12 was built in 1940 through a joint effort by Henschel (mechanical body) and Siemens-Schuckertwerke (SSW, electrical gear).
The Imperial Red Livery: To signify its elite status as Germany's fastest express workhorse, it was outshopped in a striking, deep burgundy/wine-red livery decorated with clean white pinstripes and brass national emblems.
Post-War Life & Preservation: Following the war, the locomotive was absorbed into the West German DB fleet and reclassified as Class 119 012. Because Germany lacked dedicated high-speed tracks at the time, its speed was capped at 140 km/h. It worked reliably until its retirement in January 1977. Today, E 19 12 is fully preserved in its original 1940 red paint scheme and stands on permanent public display at the DB Museum (Nuremberg Transport Museum).
